RTÉ has officially announced the new lineup for its flagship radio program, Morning Ireland, along with other news shows on its network. After much anticipation, Sarah McInerney will join Gavin Jennings and Audrey Carville as a regular presenter, alongside Justin McCarthy. This announcement follows the retirement of veteran presenter Mary Wilson in September 2023 and the recent stepping back of Áine Lawlor from the program.

In addition to the changes on Morning Ireland, Tommy Meskill has been appointed as the new co-presenter for Six One News, partnering with Sharon Tobin. Meskill recently transitioned from his role as RTÉ’s London Correspondent and has nearly a decade of experience with the network. Political correspondent Paul Cunningham will present This Week on RTÉ Radio 1 every Sunday at 13:00.

New Roles and Responsibilities

Deirdre McCarthy, Director of RTÉ News & Current Affairs, commented on the new appointments, emphasizing their significance in delivering trusted public service journalism. She stated, “These flagship news programs are among our most-watched and listened-to, representing the best of our daily news gathering. Tommy, Sarah, Justin, and Paul are all accomplished journalists who will continue to hold those in power accountable and represent the public interest.”

Sarah McInerney, previously known for co-hosting Prime Time and Drivetime, expressed her enthusiasm for joining the Morning Ireland team. “It’s a privilege to join such a strong team and to work on a program with that kind of impact,” she remarked. She acknowledged the program’s role in shaping daily conversations across the country.

Justin McCarthy, who hails from County Cork, brings experience as a former reporter on Morning Ireland. He stated, “I know the responsibility that comes with presenting a program of this stature. I look forward to working with an excellent team to continue delivering the insightful, fair, and rigorous journalism that Morning Ireland listeners expect.”

Experience and Commitment to Journalism

The changes come as part of RTÉ’s efforts to maintain high standards in journalism amidst evolving media landscapes. Tommy Meskill highlighted the importance of Six One News, stating, “Its strength depends on the work of almost the entire newsroom, which is why it’s such a cherished part of what we do.” He is eager to contribute to a program that delivers accurate and engaging news.

Paul Cunningham, who transitioned from being RTÉ’s Environment Correspondent to a political role, expressed his excitement about taking on the This Week hosting responsibilities. “I’m delighted to get the opportunity to present Ireland’s longest-running radio news program,” he declared, emphasizing its importance in setting the weekly news agenda.

The new presenters are expected to begin their roles imminently, with Sarah McInerney starting on Morning Ireland in the coming weeks. This fresh lineup aims to uphold the integrity and credibility of RTÉ’s news coverage, continuing the tradition of excellence that audiences have come to expect.
