Garda Watchdog Seeks Witnesses in Paul Butler’s Death Case
Investigators are seeking additional information regarding the death of Paul Butler, who died following an interaction with members of the Garda Síochána on O’Connell Street, Dublin, on the morning of August 15, 2023. The agency overseeing the inquiry, Fiosrú, is particularly focused on tracing Mr. Butler’s movements during the hours leading up to his fatal incident.
The investigation centers on Mr. Butler’s time spent at Fibber Magees pub on Parnell Street, where he is believed to have interacted with several individuals shortly before suffering serious injuries. Fiosrú is looking to establish the circumstances surrounding these interactions as part of their inquiry.
Fiosrú, which has taken over from the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC), is mandated to investigate incidents involving serious injuries or deaths that occur during police interactions. As part of its investigation, a Garda member was arrested in August regarding Mr. Butler’s death but was subsequently released without charge. The officer has been suspended from duty pending the outcome of the inquiry and has reportedly denied any wrongdoing.
Mr. Butler, 51, originally from Phibsborough and formerly of Grace Park Road, succumbed to his injuries four days after the incident. It is believed he sustained a head injury after falling to the ground when approached by the Garda on suspicion of intoxication. The circumstances surrounding this head injury are a key focus of the ongoing investigation.
Fiosrú issued a statement emphasizing their need for witnesses, specifically requesting anyone who interacted with or observed Mr. Butler outside Fibber Magees between 1:30 AM and 3:30 AM on August 15 to come forward. The agency expressed gratitude to those who have already provided information but believes more witnesses may be able to shed light on the period leading up to the incident.
As the investigation progresses, it is expected to take considerable time. Once concluded, a report will be submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), who will decide if any criminal charges are warranted. The case highlights the ongoing scrutiny of police conduct during interactions with the public, particularly in situations leading to serious outcomes.
