Urgent Call for Flu Vaccination as Cases Surge in Donegal

UPDATE: Health officials are sounding the alarm as flu cases surge dramatically in Donegal, urging all eligible residents to get vaccinated immediately. The Health Service Executive (HSE) West and North West reports an alarming rise in influenza cases, leading to increased hospitalizations across the region.

Regional Executive Officer Tony Canavan stated that the number of patients requiring hospitalization has more than doubled, with 418 cases reported nationwide in the last week alone—up from 213 the previous week. This rapid increase has prompted officials to call for immediate action to protect vulnerable populations.

Minister of Health Jennifer Carroll MacNeill echoed these concerns, emphasizing that hospitalizations due to flu are expected to reach double figures by Christmas. She noted that efforts are underway to alleviate the pressure on healthcare facilities, which are already strained.

“Those groups eligible for the flu vaccine, including individuals over 60 years, children aged 2-17 years, people with underlying medical conditions, and healthcare workers, must take action now to protect themselves and others,” Canavan urged. The current influenza season has commenced earlier than usual, posing significant risks to those susceptible to severe illness.

The heightened flu activity has largely been attributed to the AH3N2 variant, which is expected to cause substantial pressures on healthcare services in the coming weeks. The HSE has made free flu vaccines available at participating pharmacies and GP clinics. Healthcare workers can obtain their vaccines at staff vaccination clinics or local pharmacies.

As hospitals brace for a surge in emergency department visits, the HSE recommends that the public consider all available care options before heading to the hospital, which may experience long wait times. Residents are encouraged to utilize HSE injury units for non-life-threatening conditions and consult local pharmacies for expert advice on a range of ailments.

“Please consider all care options before coming to hospital,” Canavan advised. “We are doing everything we can to manage high attendances and improve patient flow through the emergency departments.”

All visitors to hospitals in the West and North West are reminded to practice good hand hygiene and use face masks to prevent the spread of illness. For more information on flu vaccination locations and health advice, visit www.hse.ie/flu.

As flu season intensifies, it is crucial for eligible individuals to act swiftly in getting vaccinated to help alleviate the burden on healthcare systems and protect the most vulnerable.
