The headteacher of Fivemiletown College in Co Tyrone expressed astonishment after the renowned retailer John Lewis praised the school’s Christmas video online. The short film, titled A Christmas Note, was created to celebrate the school’s 65th anniversary and shared on Facebook, receiving commendation from the retail giant.

On Friday, John Lewis commented on the video, stating, “Great to see that love lives at Fivemiletown College. Congrats on your brilliant film. Love from the John Lewis ad team.” Headteacher Janice Allen reported that the response has been “really, really overwhelming,” leaving the school community “completely amazed.”

Fivemiletown College, a small institution in a rural area, has garnered attention for its heartfelt storytelling. The five-minute film illustrates how notes hidden by students around the school and town uplift local residents. It features various local businesses, including the butchers, greengrocers, and a boutique, as well as a tractor dealer, reflecting the agricultural background of many students.

The positive feedback has extended beyond social media. According to Ms. Allen, other local schools have reached out, expressing that the video touched their hearts. At a recent screening for teachers, she noted a moving moment: “I looked around the room and there were so many of them in tears having watched it.”

The idea for the film originated from two teachers, Andrea McNeary and Izzy Galloway, who proposed the project approximately six weeks ago. They collaborated with film-maker Philip Anderson, who has a personal connection to Fivemiletown College through his late cousin, Emma Patterson, a beloved teacher at the school.

Ms. Allen remarked on the emotional impact of the project, stating, “I wish I’d had a camera to show you their faces.” The production not only honors the school’s history but also resonates deeply within the community, making it a memorable celebration of love and connection during the festive season.
