Urgent Warning: Common Cold Medication May Worsen Symptoms
URGENT UPDATE: A leading pharmacist has issued a critical warning that a commonly used medication for colds and flu can actually worsen symptoms. As the festive season approaches, many are facing a surge in seasonal illnesses, leaving millions scrambling for relief.
Frederick Apenteng, a pharmacist at Roseway Labs, emphasizes that reaching for certain over-the-counter treatments may prolong illness instead of providing relief. “Every year, we see patients struggling with lingering symptoms that could have been resolved more quickly,” he stated. Apenteng’s insights come during the peak of the sniffle season, as colds and flu threaten to disrupt holiday plans.
The pharmacist clarified that misconceptions about common treatments are rampant. Contrary to popular belief, the flu jab does not cause flu symptoms. “The vaccine doesn’t contain a live virus, so it can’t cause illness,” Apenteng explained, adding that it prepares the immune system to combat flu effectively.
Another widespread myth is that antibiotics expedite recovery. “Antibiotics only target bacterial infections, not viral colds,” he warned. Misusing antibiotics can lead to resistance, complicating future treatments.
Amidst rising cases of colds and flu, Apenteng advises that resting, staying hydrated, and consulting a pharmacist are often more effective than unnecessary medications. “Colds generally clear up within a week, while flu symptoms can last up to two weeks,” he noted. Symptoms of flu include fever, chills, and severe body aches, which can leave individuals incapacitated.
Apenteng urges anyone experiencing persistent or worsening symptoms, especially those with pre-existing conditions, to seek medical advice promptly. “If you’re struggling to breathe or symptoms worsen, it’s essential to consult your GP,” he cautioned.
As the festive season approaches, the message is clear: prioritize proper health management and be cautious about medication choices. This warning serves as a timely reminder to protect your health and avoid common pitfalls during the holiday season.
Stay informed and share this vital information with friends and family to ensure everyone navigates the winter illness season safely.
