Rape Crisis Mid-West Launches Urgent Strategic Plan for Survivors
URGENT UPDATE: Rape Crisis Mid-West has officially launched a new strategic plan aimed at significantly expanding support services for survivors of sexual violence across Limerick, Clare, and North Tipperary. This vital initiative, announced earlier today, includes the introduction of an accompaniment service for individuals attending forensic medical exams following incidents of rape or sexual assault.
Currently, survivors seeking medical examinations face challenges: they must report the incident to authorities to access these services, forcing many to travel to sexual assault treatment units in Cork or Galway if they are not ready to file a report. Rape Crisis Mid-West advocates argue this situation is unacceptable for local residents.
During the launch event, Executive Director Siobhán O’Leary expressed gratitude to the dedicated staff, volunteers, and supportive organizations, including Rape Crisis Ireland, HSE, UHL, and An Garda Síochána. Ms. O’Leary delivered a powerful message to survivors, stating:
“This is a service for you, by you and will be there for you when you are ready to take that step. I am blown away each and every time I speak with survivors, blown away by their strength of character, integrity, and courage.”
The new strategic plan commits to placing survivors at the center of all services, ensuring their voices are heard and respected. “Survivors will continue to be our guiding light,” Ms. O’Leary affirmed, emphasizing the organization’s dedication to helping individuals find justice and healing in whatever form that may take.
This launch marks a significant step forward for the Rape Crisis Mid-West, reflecting a growing recognition of the need for comprehensive support systems for survivors. As this plan unfolds, the organization encourages community members to stay informed and involved.
