Urgent Safety Review Requested at Limerick Junction After Crashes
URGENT UPDATE: A formal safety review has been requested for Sherins Cross in Dromin, near Kilmallock, following a series of serious collisions that have sparked rising concern among local residents and officials. This critical call for action came during the November meeting of the Cappamore–Kilmallock Municipal District, where Cllr PJ Carey and Cllr Greg Conway joined forces to demand an official inspection of the busy junction.
Cllr Carey highlighted the urgency of the situation, stating, “There was a bad crash two or three weeks ago,” involving an elderly woman who was struck while turning towards Kilmallock. He emphasized that the sightlines at the junction are dangerously inadequate, which contributes to the frequent accidents. “There’s no suggestion the man was speeding or doing anything wrong; it’s just a dangerous junction.”
Residents have expressed mounting frustration over the hazardous conditions, with locals reporting it’s nearly impossible to exit the crossroads safely. Cllr Carey noted, “You wouldn’t want to be hanging about; you literally have a second or two to get out of there.” The junction is also heavily trafficked by school buses, which adds to the urgency for immediate safety improvements.
While comprehensive infrastructural changes would require substantial funding, Cllr Carey is committed to allocating General Municipal Allocation (GMA) funding to initiate traffic-calming measures. “You’re never going to get a ramp on a busy road like that,” he stated. “But you can slow people down. We’ll work together to put money towards it.”
The motion for the safety review will be brought forward at the district’s next meeting, where councillors are hopeful that an inspection will trigger a much-needed plan to address the long-standing safety concerns at Sherins Cross. As residents await action, the pressing need for improvements remains clear.
This developing situation highlights the crucial intersection of community safety and infrastructure, with officials urging immediate action to prevent further incidents. Residents and authorities alike are calling for swift, effective measures to ensure the safety of all who traverse this busy junction.
