New MRSA Strain Spreads Across Europe, Raising Health Concerns

A new strain of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, known as MRSA (meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), is spreading across Europe, raising significant health concerns. First identified nearly a decade ago in Germany and the Netherlands, this strain has since been detected in at least nine additional countries, according to research conducted by Denmark’s Statens Serum Institut (SSI).
The emergence of this strain is particularly alarming as it can cause severe infections in children and has shown resistance to standard treatments. In 2019, MRSA was linked to over 100,000 deaths worldwide, underscoring the urgency of addressing this growing health threat.
Origins and Spread of the New Strain
The strain was initially recognized in 2014, but it has gained attention following an outbreak in Denmark in the summer of 2023. During this outbreak, 32 children and their family members developed ulcers attributed to this specific type of staph bacteria. Further investigations revealed another outbreak a year later, prompting scientists to suspect that Denmark was not the only country affected by this new variant.
In their analysis, researchers found the bacteria in eleven countries, including Belgium, Finland, France, Luxembourg, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. According to Andreas Petersen, a MRSA researcher at SSI who led the study, “This clone, which was first found in Germany and the Netherlands in 2014, is a new subtype” of MRSA.
Impact of the New MRSA Strain
The genetic similarity of this new strain to another form of MRSA that causes impetigo—a common bacterial skin infection—raises additional concerns. Impetigo often affects children aged two to five and is highly contagious. While the infection is usually not life-threatening, it can lead to serious complications such as kidney damage and cellulitis if left untreated.
Fusidic acid, a commonly used antibiotic cream for treating impetigo, has proven ineffective against this new MRSA strain. As a result, healthcare professionals across Europe must remain vigilant in identifying potential cases within their communities. Petersen emphasized the importance of understanding the virulence factors contributing to the strain’s success, stating, “We believe that it is a combination of these virulence factors as well as the resistance to fusidin that has helped make this new type so successful.”
The broader implications of antibiotic resistance are staggering, with projections suggesting that infections from antibiotic-resistant bacteria could result in more than 39 million deaths worldwide over the next 25 years, according to a landmark study published last year. The financial burden is also significant; the eleven countries where this new MRSA strain has been identified collectively spent nearly $13.3 billion (€11.4 billion) in 2022 on treating patients with drug-resistant infections, as reported by the Center for Global Development.
As researchers continue to monitor the situation, there is concern that the new MRSA strain may be spreading undetected in other regions of Europe. Notably, the bacteria have been found outside of hospitals and nursing homes, which typically implement strict protocols to contain such infections. Petersen remarked, “The spread of MRSA in the community is more difficult to monitor and combat,” emphasizing the need for heightened awareness and public health measures.
As this situation evolves, the scientific community urges healthcare providers and the public to remain informed about the risks associated with antibiotic-resistant infections and the ongoing threat posed by MRSA in Europe.
