Simon Harris Supports National Day of Protest Over Gaza Conflict

Simon Harris, the Tánaiste of Ireland, announced his support for a proposed national day of protest regarding the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Harris made this statement via Instagram, following the publication of a letter by Micheal Cush that called for such an event. Cush emphasized that while the Irish government has condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza, both the government and the Irish public feel increasingly frustrated and powerless to influence the situation.
In his letter, published on October 5, 2023, Cush argued that a national day of protest could significantly amplify Ireland’s voice on the matter. He suggested that this demonstration should clarify its intent: to condemn the humanitarian crises in Gaza rather than challenge Israel’s right to self-defense. “If the Government were to call a national day of protest, making clear that it was a condemnation of atrocities in Gaza… the turnout would likely be enormous,” Cush wrote.
Following this, Harris shared the letter on his social media platform and endorsed Cush’s suggestion. He articulated the sentiment of solidarity among the Irish people with those affected in Palestine, stating, “We stand for human rights, for international law, for a two-state solution, for aid to flow, for hostages to be released. We stand for peace. We stand for an end to genocide.”
Harris acknowledged the potential impact of a coordinated protest, noting, “The suggestion for a national day or moment of solidarity made by Michael Cush… could be powerful if many countries did it together.” He committed to discussing the logistics of organizing this protest with his colleagues in the government.
The call for action comes amid escalating violence and humanitarian concerns in Gaza, where civilian casualties have surged. As international calls for peace and solidarity grow, Harris’s endorsement reflects a broader desire within Ireland to take a stand against perceived injustices.
Plans for a national day of protest will now be explored, with Harris indicating that discussions with colleagues will focus on how to best mobilize public sentiment for the cause. The outcome of these discussions could determine the scale and impact of Ireland’s response to the ongoing crisis in Gaza.
