Jack Butland is determined to take control of his future at Rangers as he prepares for the upcoming season. The goalkeeper expressed his commitment to improving his performance under new head coach Russell Martin, acknowledging that his time at the club has not been without challenges.

After a strong start at Ibrox, Butland faced difficulties last season, losing his starting position to Liam Kelly. Despite this setback, he has maintained his focus on proving his worth and reclaiming his place in the squad. “I want to be the best version of myself and at least give myself the opportunity to have control of what happens next,” the 32-year-old stated.

Reflecting on his recent performances, Butland was reinstated for the final two matches of the Scottish Premiership and started in Martin’s first pre-season friendly against Club Brugge. He acknowledged that the journey has not been “smooth sailing” but emphasized his determination to contribute positively moving forward.

“I didn’t walk away from the season thinking that’s the end of it. I was very determined that I will determine how my career goes here,” Butland noted. He highlighted his commitment to remain focused despite managerial changes and to present his best self during this crucial period.

Looking ahead, Butland showcased a renewed confidence in his abilities, particularly after delivering a standout performance in the first leg of their Champions League qualifier against Panathinaikos. He helped secure a 2-0 lead, stating, “That’s what you live for… You do also have the opportunity to make a really positive impact.”

Butland’s relationship with Martin, who he faced during his time at Stoke City when Martin was a player for Norwich, has brought a new dynamic to the team. The goalkeeper expressed excitement about adapting to Martin’s style of play, which he believes will enhance the overall team performance. “There’s a different style, there’s going to be different demands on every position, how the manager expects us to play, and it’s been really exciting,” he said.

As Rangers gear up for the 2025/26 Scottish Premiership season, which kicks off on August 2 against Motherwell, Butland remains optimistic. This match will mark Martin’s first league game in charge since his appointment, following the team’s Champions League qualifier. The first home league match at Ibrox will follow on August 9 against Dundee, with the highly anticipated Old Firm clash scheduled for August 31.

With a busy schedule ahead, including six matches in December and no winter break, the season promises to be demanding. Butland is committed to playing a pivotal role in the team’s success and is eager to demonstrate his capabilities under Martin’s leadership.

As the season unfolds, he aims to showcase his skills and contribute to a more successful campaign for Rangers, hoping to close the gap with rivals Celtic as they strive for silverware. The road ahead may be challenging, but Butland’s resolve to reclaim his status as a key player remains strong.
