Urgent Appeal: Breastfeeding Mothers Needed for Milk Donations

URGENT UPDATE: The only human milk bank serving the entire Island of Ireland is making an immediate appeal for breastfeeding mothers to donate their milk. As of July 29, 2025, demand for breast milk has reached an all-time high, prompting officials to call for action.
According to the South West Acute Hospital in Enniskillen, the milk bank has been crucial in supporting neonatal units across 27 hospitals last year alone. The coordinator, Louise McSharry, who is also a former breast milk donor, emphasizes the urgent need for donations to assist vulnerable infants.
The rising demand for breast milk highlights a critical need among premature and ill newborns, who rely on human milk for nutritional and health benefits. McSharry stated, “Every ounce donated can make a significant difference in the lives of these fragile babies.”
This call to action comes at a time when many families face challenges in accessing sufficient milk supplies. The milk bank’s existing stock is dwindling, and the implications for neonatal care are severe if the situation does not improve.
Breastfeeding mothers interested in contributing are encouraged to reach out to the milk bank immediately. Donations can be arranged through the hospital’s website or by contacting the facility directly. McSharry noted that even small contributions can have a huge impact: “We are grateful for every drop.”
As this situation develops, the milk bank urges the community to rally together and support this vital cause. The need for milk donations is not only a health issue but also a community effort to protect the most vulnerable among us.
The milk bank remains committed to ensuring that every infant in need receives the nourishment they require. The time to act is now—breastfeeding mothers are encouraged to donate and help save lives.
Stay tuned for further updates on this urgent appeal and how you can help.
