UPDATE: Kilkenny County Council has officially launched the Kilkenny Age Friendly Strategy 2025–2028, a crucial initiative designed to elevate the quality of life for older residents across the county. This new strategy, just announced today, will guide efforts to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for seniors over the next three years.

The strategy is built upon extensive community consultations, ensuring it reflects the genuine needs and insights of older adults. Key focus areas include housing, transport, health services, social inclusion, and safety, all aimed at promoting active and healthy aging among the senior population.

“This strategy is a commitment to action and a testament to our collective effort to create a community where older people feel valued, empowered, and supported,” said Cllr. Mary Hilda Cavanagh, Cathaoirleach of Kilkenny County Council. “Together, we will ensure Kilkenny remains a great place to grow older.”

Kilkenny has earned recognition as a leader in Age Friendly initiatives, being home to Ireland’s first Age Friendly city, hospital, train station, hotel, and shopping center. The new strategy builds on these achievements, reinforcing Kilkenny’s ongoing dedication to becoming a truly age-friendly county.

Nickey Brennan, Kilkenny’s Age Friendly Ambassador, expressed enthusiasm for the launch, stating, “I welcome the launch of the Kilkenny Age Friendly Strategy and commend all those who contributed to the development of the plan. The vision for our Age Friendly Programme has always been for all of us to live and grow old in the comfort and safety of our own homes. That vision remains as relevant today as it was over a decade and a half ago when Kilkenny commenced its age-friendly journey.”

As Kilkenny embarks on this new chapter, residents can expect significant changes aimed at enhancing their daily lives. The full strategy is available for viewing [HERE](#).
