Ireland Expands Global Reach with 5 New Embassies and Consulates

UPDATE: Ireland is set to strengthen its global diplomatic presence by opening five new embassies and consulates as part of an ambitious expansion strategy. The Department of Foreign Affairs announced today that new embassies will be established in Belgrade, Serbia, Chisinau, Moldova, and Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, with operations beginning this autumn.
In a statement, Tánaiste Simon Harris emphasized that these new missions reflect Ireland’s “commitment to EU enlargement,” particularly as the country prepares to assume the presidency of the European Union in the second half of 2026. Harris noted, “Our expanded presence in the Western Balkans and Eastern Neighbourhood will reinforce links with countries who look to Ireland as an example of how a country can benefit from, and contribute to, the European Union.”
In addition to the embassies, Ireland will also open two new consulates: one in Málaga, Spain, and another in Melbourne, Australia. These consulates, slated to become operational in 2026, will provide essential services to the growing Irish diaspora and tourists in these regions.
Harris stated, “Taken together, and with the missions already opened as part of the Global Ireland strategy, these five new missions will further strengthen Ireland’s global presence and influence.” Under the Global Ireland 2025 strategy, aimed at doubling Ireland’s influence worldwide, a total of 22 missions have been opened to date. This includes embassies in cities like Kyiv, Rabat, Wellington, Bogotá, Amman, Monrovia, Santiago de Chile, Tehran, Manila, Dakar, and Islamabad, as well as consulates in Vancouver, Mumbai, Frankfurt, and more.
This significant diplomatic expansion highlights Ireland’s strategic intent to enhance its international influence and support for its citizens abroad. The timing of these new openings aligns with Ireland’s proactive approach to global engagement, ensuring that the country remains a vital player on the world stage.
Expect further updates as these diplomatic missions come to fruition. The international community will be watching closely as Ireland continues to build its global footprint.
