URGENT UPDATE: A man accused of attempting to murder a police officer appeared in Belfast Magistrates Court today amid shocking revelations about his state during the incident. Kyle Knell, aged 29, was reportedly suffering from a “cocaine-induced psychotic episode” when he allegedly lunged at the officer on 6 January 2023.

Today, Knell, from Tynan Drive in Newtownabbey, appeared in court handcuffed and wearing a police-issue grey tracksuit. He has been on bail for several months but was arrested again after breaching bail conditions by consuming alcohol and cocaine. Notably, Knell himself contacted the police to report his bail violation, failing a preliminary breath test upon their arrival.

Authorities revealed a harrowing account of the January incident where Knell allegedly attempted to murder an off-duty PSNI officer. The court heard that after fleeing from a hotel, Knell entered a residence in a panic, claiming someone wanted to kill him. He was found bare-chested, sweating profusely, and vomiting.

While residents called for an ambulance, the off-duty officer intervened, identifying himself in an attempt to de-escalate the situation. However, a struggle ensued when Knell lunged at him. During the tussle, Knell managed to grab the officer’s concealed Glock 17, and a single shot was fired, hitting the officer in the thigh and injuring a woman in the house.

The incident escalated further as police later found Knell had entered another home, reportedly restraining a teenage boy before his arrest. Knell faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life, and aggravated burglary, among others.

Defense solicitor John Greer argued today that this was Knell’s first breach of bail, emphasizing his struggle with personal issues, particularly regarding his son. District Judge John Meehan adjourned the case to 5 September 2023, allowing Knell to return to bail, citing police contentment with his release.

As the legal proceedings continue, this case raises significant questions about mental health and substance abuse, particularly in relation to violent crime. The court’s handling of such incidents will be closely watched as more details emerge.
