Police Officer Injured After Being Dragged by Car in Kilkeel

A police officer has sustained injuries after being dragged by a moving vehicle during a traffic stop in Kilkeel, Co Down, on the night of August 1, 2025. The incident occurred around 22:15 local time on Mountain Road, where officers were conducting routine traffic duties.
According to a police spokesperson, officers initiated a stop of a silver Mitsubishi Shogun. As one officer leaned into the vehicle, he detected a strong smell of what he suspected to be cannabis. When questioned about the odor, the driver accelerated rapidly, dragging the officer several metres before he managed to free himself.
The injured officer suffered an arm injury and was unable to continue his duties. He subsequently sought medical attention at a local hospital. Police confirmed that an investigation into the incident is currently underway.
The police statement highlighted the risks officers face daily, stating, “Police officers carry out their job knowing that on any given day they could be faced with difficult and dangerous situations, but it is completely unacceptable that they should be deliberately injured.” The spokesperson emphasized the serious potential consequences of the driver’s actions and assured the public that the perpetrator will face legal repercussions.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident, especially those with dashcam footage, to contact the police at 101 and quote reference number 1742 from August 1, 2025. The police are committed to ensuring safety and accountability in the community.
