Dublin Woman Shares Urgent Call for Asthma Medication Support

UPDATE: A Dublin grandmother, Lesley Dunne, has made a powerful appeal for urgent government action on asthma medication as she reveals the terrifying realities of living with chronic asthma. Dunne, aged 61, is advocating for subsidies in the upcoming 2026 budget, amid alarming findings that 1 in 4 asthma sufferers are unable to afford their medications.

Lesley’s journey with asthma took a drastic turn after a series of personal tragedies and health crises. Diagnosed in her teens, she managed her condition without significant issues until a stressful period led to a hospitalization for pneumonia just two days after losing her husband to cancer in 2020. “I was shocked at how quickly my asthma worsened,” she shared, noting that her symptoms became uncontrollable despite her regular medication.

After enduring multiple hospitalizations, Lesley was placed on a new, highly controlled treatment called ‘biologics,’ which is only available to patients who have exhausted all other options. “These new treatments have been successful in the UK, giving me hope for a less debilitating future,” she stated, expressing her eagerness to commence her next round of treatment.

The emotional toll of chronic asthma has reshaped Lesley’s life. She recalls a recent trip to Spain where she required assistance at the airport, a stark contrast to her previous fitness level when she frequented the gym three times a week. “When my asthma isn’t great, my physical ability is hugely challenged,” she explained. “It’s so scary to feel out of breath.”

Lesley’s experience underscores a broader crisis affecting asthma patients across Ireland. The Asthma Society of Ireland reports that many patients are struggling financially, with medications costing up to €80 a month. Eilís Ní Chaithnía, CEO of the Asthma Society, stated, “Asthma imposes a heavy financial burden.
