UK’s Most Tattooed Man Locked Out of Websites Due to New Law

BREAKING: The UK’s most tattooed man, Matthew Whelan, known as the King of Ink Land, is facing severe online restrictions due to the newly enacted Online Safety Act. This legislation, designed to protect minors from explicit content, is locking Whelan out of websites that require age verification, as his extensive face tattoos lead to identity verification failures.
Whelan, who has over 1,600 hours of tattoo work on his body, claims that nearly 90% of his skin is covered in ink. The 45-year-old from Birmingham expressed his frustration, stating that age verification technology does not recognize his likeness due to his facial tattoos. “I can’t just do a Nicholas Cage or John Travolta like in Face/Off. All this proves is that technology and AI are discriminatory,” he told Need To Know.
The Online Safety Act, which requires explicit websites to implement stringent age checks, has left Whelan feeling punished for his appearance. He further stated, “This is who I am. Why is it trying to change me?” His unique look, which has affected his work life in the past, is now hindering his daily online activities, leading him to consider using a VPN to bypass these checks.
Whelan’s case highlights a growing concern over inclusivity in technology and the potential for discrimination against those with unconventional appearances. “No matter how different or alternative you look, there is no place for discrimination — especially from technology,” he added.
As this situation unfolds, it raises urgent questions about the implications of the Online Safety Act for individuals with distinctive features. The impact of this legislation on personal identity and access to the digital world is under scrutiny, and Whelan’s experience could be a catalyst for broader discussions on these issues.
With calls for more inclusive technology, Whelan’s story resonates with many who face similar challenges in navigating a system that often fails to acknowledge diversity. As the online landscape continues to evolve, the intersection of safety and personal identity will remain a critical topic.
Stay tuned for updates on this developing story as discussions around online safety and discrimination continue to gain momentum.
