UPDATE: Galway’s celebrated accordionist, Gerry Hanley, is set to launch his debut solo album, In the Middle of It, tonight at Monroe’s Live at 7:30 PMtwelve tracks encompassing reels, jigs, hornpipes, and slow airs, all deeply rooted in Galway’s musical heritage. Hanley emphasizes the album’s significance, stating, “It’s dedicated to my parents, who instilled a love for accordion music in me.”

Originally from the Galway music scene, Hanley was surrounded by the sounds of the accordion from an early age. His father, Padraig Hanley, played the accordion, while his mother, Eileen Hanley, hailed from East Galway. Gerry recalls, “I never knew life without the sound of an accordion.”

The launch comes as Gerry celebrates his return to music after years of performing with renowned groups like the Roudledum Band and recording in notable studios since 1975. This solo endeavor reflects his personal journey and commitment to traditional music, stating, “It’s not trying to be flashy or fashionable. It’s traditional music, the way I heard it growing up.”

The album was produced by Carl Hession, a long-time friend and collaborator, who adds his expertise to the mix alongside talented musicians Eimear Coughlan on harp and Maureen Fahy on fiddle.

Looking ahead, Hanley and fellow musicians have been invited to perform in Menlo Park, California during St. Patrick’s Week in 2026, deepening his connection with the Californian tech hub. This invitation highlights a longstanding relationship that began when Hanley was part of the initial delegation fostering sister city ties between Galway and Menlo Park.

As the launch event approaches, Gerry expresses mixed emotions: “It’s daunting in some ways, but exciting. I hope this album captures the spirit of the music I grew up with.”
