Urgent: Irish Humanitarian Kidnapped in Haiti, Family Prays for Return

UPDATE: The family of Irish humanitarian Gena Heraty is “absolutely devastated” following the shocking news that she and seven colleagues have been kidnapped from an orphanage in Kenscoff, Haiti. The incident, confirmed just hours ago, has sent ripples of concern across both local and international communities.
Gena, who has dedicated her life to humanitarian efforts in Haiti since 1993, serves as the Director of Special Needs Programmes at Nos Petits Frères et Sœurs (NPFS). This organization is pivotal in supporting children and young adults with disabilities. Her family is urging the public to keep Gena and her colleagues in their thoughts as they pray for their safe return.
In a heartfelt statement released to The Mayo News, the Heraty family describes the situation as “evolving and deeply worrying.” They are collaborating closely with NPFS, the Irish Government, and various international partners to secure the immediate release of Gena and her team.
“NPFS Haiti is actively working to ensure the ongoing safety and well-being of all children and workers at the orphanage during this challenging time,” the family added. They have expressed gratitude for the support they are receiving but have requested privacy, stating, “out of respect for the ongoing efforts and for Gena’s safety, we are not in a position to share further details at this time.”
The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed awareness of the incident and is providing consular assistance, underscoring the urgency of the situation. With growing concern from the community, many are rallying to support the family and demand swift action for Gena’s release.
This distressing event highlights the risks faced by humanitarian workers in volatile regions. As the situation develops, the Heraty family is calling for prayers and support, emphasizing the critical need for Gena’s safe return.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and will provide updates as they become available. The international community remains hopeful for a positive resolution in the coming days.
