Thug Jailed After Attempting Carjacking with Fake Gun Made of Bag

UPDATE: A man has been sentenced to 19 months in prison after attempting to carjack police officers using a makeshift weapon made from a Primark paper bag. The bizarre incident unfolded on February 22, 2023, in Telford, Shropshire, and has left the local community in shock.
Matthew Sylvester, 37, chased down a police vehicle and pointed the imitation firearm at officers, leading them to believe their lives were in immediate danger. Police Constables Dan Arthur and George Oliver were on patrol when they encountered Sylvester, who shouted, “I’ve got a gun!” before demanding they exit the vehicle.
Initially, the officers were alarmed, assuming the weapon was real. Sylvester had threatened staff at a nearby store before constructing the faux gun in a desperate attempt to evade arrest. After realizing the “gun” was merely a bag, the officers quickly subdued him when he opened the boot of the police car.
In a statement, PC Arthur expressed the fear they felt during the confrontation, stating, “It’s a pretty stressful situation to be in… I hope I make it back.” His colleague echoed this sentiment, highlighting the psychological toll of facing a potential armed threat.
The incident escalated as Sylvester had previously attempted to break into a shop, using a shopping trolley to smash his way in. His erratic behavior included exposing himself to bystanders, indicating a state of distress likely exacerbated by drug use.
During sentencing at Shrewsbury Crown Court, Recorder Anthony Warner emphasized the gravity of Sylvester’s actions, noting how frightening the situation was for both officers and the public. Sylvester, with a criminal record of 34 previous convictions for 84 offences, was on license after serving time for a similar charge.
Chief Inspector Matt Sanders of West Mercia Police commended the bravery of PCs Arthur and Oliver, stating, “Sylvester’s actions were calculated… He intended to cause harm and distress.” The officers have been praised for their quick response and professionalism in the face of danger.
Authorities report that Sylvester’s attempt to instill fear was not only reckless but also premeditated, demonstrating a blatant disregard for law enforcement and public safety. As the community processes the shocking event, many are left wondering how someone could resort to such absurd measures.
As of now, Sylvester faces a considerable period of incarceration, and the police will continue to monitor the implications of this incident on community safety. The bravery shown by officers on that night serves as a reminder of the risks faced by law enforcement daily.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as the community reacts and local authorities respond to the aftermath of this bizarre crime.
