Limerick Author Donna Abel Releases Heartfelt Debut Novel Today

UPDATE: Limerick author Donna Abel has just released her debut novel, Lost and Found: The Misadventure of a Reluctant Trekker, as a heartfelt tribute to her late mother, Carmel Hogan, who passed away unexpectedly in October 2022. This compelling book, available now on Amazon, coincides with what would have been Carmel’s 71st birthday, making its release especially poignant for Abel.
Abel, who has lived in Jersey for 28 years, combines her experiences as a HR director and CEO of a local charity with her passion for writing. The novel reflects her journey of healing and coping with her mother’s sudden death, which she describes as a “great distraction” during her grief.
In a deeply personal statement, Abel shared, “I started writing while on holiday; it was my way of coping with grief.” The book captures the essence of loss through humor and imagination, showcasing the resilience found in adversity.
Lost and Found follows the story of a burnt-out businesswoman named Samantha, who impulsively bids on a charity trek through Vietnam. What begins as a comedy of errors transforms into an adventure of self-discovery and healing, mirroring Abel’s own path through grief.
Abel’s mother, Carmel, had a passion for storytelling and reading, which inspired her daughter’s writing. Reflecting on her mother’s life, Abel recalled, “She went on a trip of a lifetime to Rome… and passed away while making a cup of tea. A very Irish way to die.” This juxtaposition of humor and heartache resonates throughout the book, making it relatable for many.
The novel is not just an adventure tale; it delves into themes of friendship, emotional resilience, and the journey of coping with loss. As Abel notes, “Some of the stories are true, some are stretched, and others are completely made up,” inviting readers to engage with the narrative on a personal level.
“This project means a great deal to me personally,” Abel stated, emphasizing that the themes of loss and resilience are universal. She believes that her story will resonate with anyone who has experienced the complexities of grief, bringing both laughter and comfort.
The emotional depth of Lost and Found serves as a testament to Abel’s journey, and she hopes it provides readers with a moment of escape amidst their own challenges. “It’s surreal to think my Mam isn’t here to see this book come to life. This is for her,” she said, highlighting the emotional stakes behind the publication.
As the book gains traction, readers are eager to share their experiences with Abel’s story, contributing to the ongoing conversation about loss and healing. The release of Lost and Found marks not only a milestone in Abel’s career but also a significant chapter in her personal healing journey.
Next Steps: Readers are encouraged to purchase the book on Amazon and join the dialogue around its themes of resilience and friendship. Abel’s story is a reminder that sometimes, getting lost is the first step towards finding oneself.
