Máire Murray, 50, Laid to Rest Today Following Tragic Drowning

UPDATE: Máire Murray, a beloved community member, is being laid to rest today, August 8, 2023, after a tragic drowning incident in southwest Donegal. The funeral service is set for 12:00 PM at Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Harold’s Cross, Dublin, followed by cremation at Mount Jerome crematorium.
Murray, aged in her 50s, was swimming at An Trá Bheag (The Wee Beach) in Glencolmcille last Friday evening when she encountered difficulties in the water. A highly respected chief pharmacist at St Michael’s Hospital in Dún Laoghaire, she had just completed a week-long Irish language course at the Oideas Gael college, a testament to her love for learning and connection to the community.
Tributes have poured in from those who knew her, including a heartfelt statement from former Irish President Mary McAleese. McAleese remarked, “Máire will be remembered with great fondness and grief,” highlighting the profound impact she had on the lives of many.
Murray, who had deep roots in the area and had been a frequent visitor for over 20 years, will be remembered for her kindness, wit, and intelligence. She is survived by her sister Catherine (Kate); brothers Tomás (USA) and Kevin (Cork); sister-in-law Allie; and her cherished nieces and nephew.
This tragic event has left a void in the hearts of her wide circle of friends, extended family, and colleagues at St. Michael’s Hospital. The community is coming together to honor her memory and support those who are grieving.
As the funeral service unfolds, many are reflecting on the legacy of Máire Murray—a life dedicated to community, compassion, and connection. Her spirit will undoubtedly live on in the memories of those she touched.
