LDA Unveils Plans for 285 Affordable Homes in Limerick NOW

URGENT UPDATE: The Land Development Agency (LDA) has just announced plans to develop 285 new affordable homes at the Gasworks site on Dock Road, Limerick. This significant development aims to address the urgent need for housing in the area and is set to begin construction as early as 2027, pending approval.
The proposed project will feature a mix of 142 one-bedroom, 127 two-bedroom, and 16 three-bedroom apartments, distributed across three blocks ranging from **1 to 8 storeys**. In addition to residential units, the plans include a new public plaza, landscaped gardens, communal spaces, play areas, retail units, and a childcare facility.
The development is strategically located less than a 15-minute walk from Limerick city centre and is accessible through existing bus links, connecting residents to key locations such as the University of Limerick and University Hospital Limerick. This prime location not only enhances convenience but also supports community engagement by incorporating existing heritage artifacts like the notable freestanding limestone wall facing Dock Road.
John Coleman, Chief Executive of the LDA, stated, “Having worked extensively on the design process for this site, we are confident that this project, in a prime location near Limerick city centre, has the capacity to revitalize the area through the delivery of 285 much-needed affordable homes and amenities.”
Ronan Galwey, Acting CEO of Gas Networks Ireland, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the critical collaboration between state bodies to tackle the affordable housing crisis. “Gas Networks Ireland is proud to support the LDA in addressing this challenge. The Limerick site is a prime example of how state bodies can work together to unlock the potential of public land for community benefit.”
This announcement marks a crucial milestone in the LDA’s ongoing mission to deliver affordable housing solutions. Following the successful launch of cost rental homes at The Mills in Castletroy earlier this year, the LDA’s plans for the Gasworks site represent a significant step forward in meeting the housing demand in Limerick.
As the planning application moves forward, all eyes will be on the upcoming reviews and approvals. Community members, local officials, and stakeholders await the outcome, hoping for swift progress in addressing Limerick’s housing needs.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as the LDA continues to push for a brighter, more affordable future for the residents of Limerick.
