EasyJet has made a significant investment in the FANS-C navigation software, aimed at enhancing airspace efficiency and improving on-time performance for its operations. The low-cost airline has retrofitted this advanced system on 54 of its A320 and A321 neo family aircraft. Additionally, new planes coming off the Airbus assembly line will be equipped with this technology as standard.

The FANS-C system serves as a sophisticated traffic management tool, facilitating improved collaboration between pilots and air traffic controllers. By enhancing communication speed, optimizing in-flight trajectories, and simplifying aircraft speed management during all flight phases, it addresses the growing congestion in European airspace. As delays become increasingly common, FANS-C broadcasts precise aircraft trajectories to air traffic control (ATC) in a flexible, reliable, and secure manner. This innovation aims to enhance predictability, reduce holding patterns, accelerate clearances, and ultimately enable more on-time landings.

Technological Impact and Environmental Benefits

David Morgan, Chief Operating Officer at EasyJet, commented on the importance of FANS-C, stating, “Technologies like FANS-C are not only essential for the modernisation of airspace; they will be critical in helping deliver meaningful reductions in fuel, carbon emissions and noise pollution.” He emphasized the need for airspace reform to maximize the potential of such technologies, advocating for more direct routes to alleviate congestion and delays. Morgan noted that the UK government has initiated positive steps towards redesigning UK airspace, urging for swift implementation across Europe to fully leverage the environmental benefits these technologies offer.

Since the implementation of FANS-C in 2019, EasyJet has already achieved substantial savings, reporting a reduction of 1,052 tonnes of CO2 equivalent and 334 tonnes of fuel savings over the Eurocontrol’s Maastricht Upper Area Control (MUAC) region. Further savings are anticipated as additional air navigation service providers (ANSPs) modernize their ATC ground control systems, a move that will be mandatory across the European Union by 2028.

Commitment to Sustainability

EasyJet has been actively pursuing a roadmap to reduce and decarbonize its environmental impact since 2022. This initiative includes ongoing investments in various operational efficiencies designed to lower the airline’s environmental footprint both in the air and on the ground. The integration of FANS-C is a critical step in this journey, aligning with EasyJet’s broader goals of sustainability and operational excellence.

As air travel continues to evolve, the implementation of advanced technologies like FANS-C positions EasyJet at the forefront of the industry’s efforts to improve efficiency and environmental responsibility.
