Galway City Council Awards Contract for 84 Urgent Social Homes

URGENT UPDATE: Galway City Council has just awarded a contract for the construction of 84 social housing units in Ballyburke, marking a significant advancement in addressing the housing crisis. The contract has been given to OCC Construction, who will spearhead the ambitious Fána an tSrutháin social housing scheme.
This development is set to include 71 apartments distributed across four blocks, alongside 13 terraced family units. Notably, 40% of the apartments will be designed with age-friendly and universal design principles, strategically located near the proposed local center services.
Leonard Cleary, Chief Executive of Galway City Council, expressed his enthusiasm during the contract signing, stating, “I’m delighted to see this scheme reach this important milestone. This project will provide much-needed housing units in an efficient manner, enhance infrastructure, and improve facilities for residents in the area.”
Construction work is expected to commence in the coming weeks, with completion anticipated by late 2027. This initiative will not only add to the housing stock but also features a new central community plaza, local center units, a café, and a crèche facility, creating a vibrant neighborhood atmosphere.
This project brings the total number of social housing units planned in Galway City from 2022 to 2027 to an impressive 1,120, showcasing the council’s commitment to addressing housing needs effectively.
As the housing crisis continues to escalate, the implementation of this project is crucial for enhancing living conditions and providing essential services to the community. Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to stay updated as construction progresses.
This development is not just about building homes; it aims to foster a sense of community and provide vital resources for families in Ballyburke. The urgency of the housing situation makes this announcement particularly significant for those in need of affordable housing solutions.
Stay tuned for more updates as this vital project unfolds in the coming weeks.
