Trump and Putin Meet in Alaska: Ukraine’s Future at Stake

UPDATE: A crucial summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin is underway today in Anchorage, Alaska. This landmark meeting marks Putin’s first visit to American soil since 2015 and could hold significant implications for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Just hours before the meeting, uncertainty looms over the agenda and objectives, raising questions about the summit’s potential for meaningful outcomes. The talks, scheduled to begin at 11:30 AM local time (8:30 PM Irish time) at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, aim to address the war in Ukraine, yet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been excluded from discussions, prompting skepticism among analysts.
Trump announced the summit only a week ago, claiming it as a bold diplomatic initiative. However, the absence of clear objectives has left many unsure of what to expect. Following a private conversation between the two leaders, a broader meeting with their respective delegations will take place. Key Russian officials, including Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Defence Minister Andrei Belousov, are in attendance, while Zelenskyy and Putin’s chief negotiator, Vladimir Medinsky, will not be present.
According to the Kremlin, the core focus will center on “settling the conflict in Ukraine,” with discussions on economic cooperation and global security also on the table. Trump has hinted at the possibility of a second meeting involving Zelenskyy but cautioned of “severe consequences” should talks falter.
Experts warn that the stakes are exceptionally high. Professor Donnacha Ó Beacháin of Dublin City University suggests that the meeting could lead to varying outcomes, from Trump taking a strong stance against Putin if he feels shortchanged to potentially endorsing Kremlin demands, which could leave Ukraine’s fate entirely in their hands.
“There’s a real chance Trump could walk away with little to show for it,” Ó Beacháin stated. “Putin is likely to project a narrative of strength, while Trump may claim he is making progress, even if there are no significant changes.”
Tensions have escalated in the region, with Russian forces reportedly making significant advances in eastern Ukraine ahead of the summit. Ukrainian officials indicate the offensive is aimed at gaining leverage before the negotiations. Ó Beacháin notes that with Ukraine shut out of direct talks, the situation feels increasingly precarious.
As the meeting unfolds, the anticipation surrounding its outcome is palpable. The potential for a rift between the two leaders or a consensus that favors Russian demands could reshape the landscape of this ongoing conflict. The international community is watching closely, as any agreements—or lack thereof—could have far-reaching implications for Ukraine and beyond.
The stakes are existential for Ukraine, with patriotism running high despite the ongoing war. As one Ukrainian soldier emphasized, “We didn’t want this war, but we’re not going to roll over.”
Trump has framed this summit as a starting point for future negotiations, suggesting that the results of today could set the stage for more comprehensive discussions. Whether that includes Zelenskyy remains to be seen, but the urgency of the situation cannot be overstated.
Stay tuned for live updates as the situation develops throughout the day.
