Killybegs AC Mourns Loss of Trailblazer Lilyan Melly, 2023

BREAKING: Killybegs Athletic Club has announced the passing of former athlete Lilyan Melly, who died peacefully in her home in Edmonds, Seattle, surrounded by family. The club, a cornerstone of her early athletic career, is honoring her legacy as a trailblazer in Irish athletics.
Lilyan, formerly of The Hill, Killybegs, passed away on Wednesday, July 19, 2023. She was celebrated as a vital part of the club’s history, being the first member to win a medal at the Irish Schools Championships. Her contributions to Killybegs AC and her community leave a lasting impact.
Known for her athletic prowess, Lilyan was a standout member of her school’s relay team, achieving multiple honors and medals throughout her career. In 1972, she claimed the county U/13 200m title, secured silver in the 100m, and played a crucial role in Killybegs’ relay team, earning silver at the Ulster Junior Championships.
A spokesperson from Killybegs AC stated,
“May she rest in peace.”
Lilyan’s achievements not only inspired her teammates but also set a standard for future generations of athletes in the region.
Predeceased by her infant son Noel and her parents John and Rosaleen Melly, she leaves behind her loving husband John, sons John (Kate) and Michael, grandchildren Jack, John Victor, Freddie, and Niamh, siblings Michael, Faustina (Hughie), Fiona, and Shane, along with many cherished nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
A Requiem Mass is scheduled for Thursday, July 21, 2023, at 7 PM in St. Mary of the Visitation Church, Killybegs. For those unable to attend, the mass will be streamed live at the following link: Watch Live.
