He also served as Chaplain at the Abbey Vocational School before embarking on a mission to Lima, Peru in 1987 alongside fellow priests from the Raphoe Diocese. Upon his return, he took up his role in the Carrigart and Meevagh parish in 1995, becoming the official parish priest in 2000.

The Raphoe Diocese expressed its heartfelt gratitude in a statement, saying, “We offer heartfelt gratitude for his years of dedicated ministry and wish him many blessings and restful years ahead.” This significant transition highlights the deep impact Fr Byrne has had on the community over his decades of service.
