Urgent Backlash Grows Against Mise Éire Festival in Mayo

UPDATE: Over 1,000 residents in Mayo have signed a petition opposing the controversial Mise Éire festival, scheduled for Saturday, August 23, 2023, at the Ivy Tower Hotel. Launched just yesterday, the petition expresses strong disapproval, stating, “Castlebar is widely regarded as a vibrant, welcoming, and diverse town.”

The backlash intensified as the activist group United Against Racism Mayo urged hotel workers to boycott the event, stating a strike would send a “strong message” against hate. “Hosting this festival will cause serious damage to the hotel’s reputation,” they warned.

The petition highlights concerns over the festival’s “unusual level of secrecy,” leaving residents uncertain about its true nature and impact on the community. The event’s organizing team claims to celebrate shared Irish culture, yet details remain vague.

Critics point to the festival’s inclusion of controversial figures like journalist John Waters, known for his associations with far-right groups, and Stephen Kerr, the festival’s chief organizer, who previously ran for political office while advocating against immigration policies.

Musicians including Kneecap, Fontaines D.C., and actor Chris O’Dowd have already voiced their opposition in a letter demanding the festival’s cancellation. Responding to the backlash, Kerr labeled the musicians as “anti-Irish,” further fueling community outrage.

Originally set for Drumshanbo’s Mayflower Community Centre in Leitrim, the festival was relocated to the Ivy Tower Hotel after facing significant backlash. The hotel has remained tight-lipped on the event’s status, only acknowledging an influx of inquiries regarding the festival.

As the community rallies against the Mise Éire festival, the situation remains fluid. Residents are urged to stay informed as further developments unfold.
