Westmeath Hurlers Assemble Strong Backroom Team for 2026 Season

Westmeath GAA has unveiled a formidable backroom team as they prepare for the upcoming 2026 hurling season. Newly appointed head coach Kevin O’Brien has enlisted several prominent figures in the sport, including Ollie Baker, a double All-Ireland winner from Clare, who brings a wealth of experience to the role.
Baker, who previously managed Offaly, has personal ties to the Westmeath footballers, as his sons, Senan and Tadhg, are both involved with the Caulry club and were part of the senior panel this year. His inclusion is expected to strengthen the team’s competitive edge.
Damien Coleman, who has served as a GAA Games Manager with Galway and Connacht, will take on the role of head coach. Coleman has also gained extensive coaching experience in his hometown of Portumna, making him a valuable asset to O’Brien’s team. Meanwhile, former Westmeath star Brendan Murtagh has been appointed as a selector, bringing his insights from his playing days to the backroom setup.
The backroom team further includes Niall Stack, a psychologist; Darren Giles, responsible for player wellbeing; Barry Whelan, who will handle statistics; and Alan Kenna, serving as pitch coordinator. Collectively, this team is expected to enhance the overall performance and wellbeing of the players.
As Westmeath looks forward to the 2026 season, they will aim to improve upon their previous campaign, where they did not reach the Joe McDonagh Cup Final. The team is expected to compete vigorously in this prestigious tournament next year. With further additions to the backroom team anticipated, the preparations are well underway to elevate Westmeath hurling to new heights.
