410,000 Irish Households Set to Receive €924 Fuel Allowance

This winter, approximately 410,000 Irish households will benefit from a fuel allowance payment totaling €924. The scheme is designed to assist lower-income individuals and couples aged over 66 years, with eligibility based on specific income thresholds: individuals must have means under €524 per week, while couples must have a combined income of less than €1,048 per week.
The Minister for Social Protection, Dara Calleary, emphasized the importance of the fuel allowance during an interview with Midwest Radio. He remarked, “This is such a valuable support for so many households,” highlighting its critical role in helping families manage their heating costs during the colder months. Calleary also indicated that the fuel allowance payments will be a focal point in discussions for the 2026 budget.
New Eligibility Criteria Expand Access
Recent adjustments to the eligibility criteria have expanded access to the fuel allowance scheme. Individuals over 66 years old are no longer required to be in receipt of other social protection payments to apply. Previously, this scheme was limited to those aged over 70, but the criteria were revised in the 2025 budget to include a broader range of pensioners.
Recipients of the fuel allowance can choose between receiving the payment in weekly installments of €33 or opting for two larger payments of €462 each. This flexibility allows households to select the option that best suits their financial needs.
For those interested in applying for the fuel allowance, the application process is available online. Detailed information regarding eligibility and the application process can be found on the official government website.
As winter approaches, this financial support aims to alleviate some of the burden faced by vulnerable households, ensuring that they can maintain adequate heating during the colder months. The initiative underscores the government’s commitment to supporting its citizens, particularly those in need.
