An Post Plans Relocation of Limerick Sorting Office After 26 Years
An Post is considering relocating its sorting office in Limerick after 26 years at the Docklands Business Park. The postal service is exploring options for a new facility to accommodate the increasing volume of parcels and mail. Currently, residents must visit the Docklands depot to collect items that cannot be delivered directly to their homes.
As parcel volumes continue to rise, An Post is evaluating the need for enhanced space and facilities. A spokesperson for the company stated, “We are planning for the future and exploring alternative sites and facilities.” The Dock Road delivery unit has been operational since 1999, and prior to that, collection services were provided near Limerick’s general post office on Lower Cecil Street.
New Development Plans Underway
Conditional planning permission has been granted by Limerick City and County Council for a new delivery services unit at Alandale Road, located near Mary Immaculate College. Although An Post is not the applicant for this development, planning documents feature images of a proposed delivery unit prominently displaying the company’s branding.
According to the planning application, the new facility could lead to the creation of 14 new jobs, adding to the existing workforce of 33 staff who currently operate around the clock at the Dock Road site. Additionally, An Post plans to expand its fleet by introducing 24 new delivery vans, which would increase the total to 132 vehicles servicing the new unit if the project proceeds. The plans also include the installation of 139 electric vehicle charging stations to support sustainability efforts.
The spokesperson for An Post further elaborated on the project, stating, “In Limerick, we are looking at a range of options including a new site for our mail operations and our existing facility at Dock Road. We have sought planning permission for a possible new development with this in mind. But the project is still in its early stages and will take a number of years to complete.”
Future of the Docklands Facility
Limerick City and County Council granted permission for the warehouse development subject to seven conditions. This permission will expire in March 2029, prompting An Post to act within that timeframe if they decide to move forward with the new facility.
As An Post navigates this transitional phase, the potential relocation signifies a strategic step towards enhancing service delivery in Limerick, addressing the evolving needs of its customers while adapting to the changing landscape of mail and parcel distribution. The future developments will reflect a commitment to not only improving operational efficiency but also embracing sustainable practices in the logistics sector.
