An Post Warns Against Sending Food Gifts to the US This Christmas
An Post has issued a warning to individuals in Ireland advising them not to send certain food items to loved ones in the United States this Christmas. The postal service stated that items such as teabags, crisps, and chocolate are prohibited under new regulations. These restrictions are part of a broader update to tariffs that came into effect on August 29, 2023.
The recent changes mean that all goods valued under $800 are no longer tax-exempt, which could lead to packages being stopped or returned. Additionally, items valued over $2,500 are not accepted for shipment. An Post emphasized the importance of accurately declaring the value of packages to avoid complications.
While these new rules impose restrictions on many items, gifts with a value under $100 or €85 can continue to be sent without changes to existing protocols. There are also exemptions for books deemed “purely educational,” which are not subject to the new tariffs. Notably, there will be no changes affecting letters and documents sent to the US.
To assist Irish senders with understanding these regulations, An Post encouraged them to consult the United States International Trade Commission for specific tariff details on various items. The postal service aims to support customers in navigating these new rules to ensure a smoother shipping experience during the holiday season.
As the holiday season approaches, families and friends sending gifts across the Atlantic should remain mindful of these new restrictions to avoid disappointment.
