Annmarie Naughton is successfully managing a dual career, balancing her role as a business manager at McDonald’s in Limerick with the responsibilities of running a 40-acre beef farm in Ballysteen. The 39-year-old embraces her busy lifestyle, stating, “I’m lovin’ it!” while tending to her 15 Cross Angus cows after her shifts at one of the city’s busiest fast-food restaurants.

Naughton, who has worked at McDonald’s in the Crescent Shopping Centre for the past eight years, typically puts in around 38 hours a week at the restaurant. Her farming duties can add another 30 to 35 hours, especially during winter when her cattle require additional care. This unique combination of work keeps her engaged, as she remarks, “No two days are the same – on the farm or at McDonald’s – and that’s what I love.”

From Family Roots to Farming Success

Naughton’s connection to farming runs deep. Growing up around cattle, she inherited part of her late father David Naughton’s 100-acre farm in 2016. David, a former Cathaoirleach of Limerick County Council, had transitioned the land into forestry after the passing of his wife Geraldine in 2009. When the opportunity arose for Annmarie to revitalize the beef herd, she eagerly accepted.

With the support of her wife, Marie, who works full-time in payroll, Annmarie manages her responsibilities despite Marie’s lack of farming experience. “She’s brilliant. It’s definitely not something she was used to, but she’s not afraid to get stuck in,” Annmarie commented about her partner’s willingness to assist on the farm.

After a long day at McDonald’s, Annmarie finds relief in the fresh air of the farm, joking, “At least the cows don’t talk back!”

A Journey Through McDonald’s

Annmarie’s journey at McDonald’s began in 2004 when she joined the Crescent team. After six years, she traveled to Thailand and Australia before returning to Ireland in 2014. She rejoined McDonald’s part-time while pursuing her Green Cert in agriculture. By 2016, she had progressed to a shift manager position, advancing to first assistant and ultimately becoming a business manager.

She attributes her growth at McDonald’s to the skills she acquired, stating, “It’s a great place to learn. You don’t just flip burgers — you learn to manage people, stock, operations. All of those things carry over to the farm.”

Naughton also acknowledges the strong relationship between McDonald’s and Irish agriculture, noting that the chain sources approximately 40,000 tonnes of Irish beef each year, a significant boost for local farmers.

Franchisee Aaron Byrne praised Naughton’s dedication and work ethic, saying, “We’re very lucky to have her on the team. She has a stunning work ethic and an enthusiasm for everything she does. If she’s not at the restaurant, she’s out on the farm at home. She’s a breath of fresh air – and a fantastic role model.”

As for her future, Annmarie remains open to possibilities, stating, “Maybe general manager – or whatever else the future holds.” For now, though, she is focused on her responsibilities, ensuring her cows are well-fed and cared for.
