Construction of Cleary Centre in Donegal Town Set to Begin in 2026

Plans for the reconstruction of the Cleary Centre in Donegal Town are advancing, with construction anticipated to commence in 2026. The project is currently in the detailed design phase and is expected to go to tender in the last quarter of this year. This significant development aims to enhance facilities for adults with disabilities, addressing long-standing concerns regarding the current inadequate services.

At a recent meeting of the Regional Health Forum West, Councillor Michael Naughton provided an update on the progress of the Cleary Centre. He emphasized the pressing need for improved facilities, noting that staff are currently operating out of a warehouse and have been awaiting advancements for over two years. “Until we see machines on the ground, we won’t believe this will happen,” Cllr Naughton remarked, highlighting the frustrations faced by those involved.

The original Cleary Centre has been closed since 2014. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the former school building was repurposed as a temporary testing centre for the South Donegal area. The new Cleary Centre will be constructed on the same site in Drumlonagher and will feature a variety of therapeutic spaces designed to support adults with disabilities.

The planned facilities will include four large multipurpose rooms equipped with secure outdoor areas, a physiotherapy room, a regulation room, and a training kitchen. In addition, the design encompasses a laundry room and a spacious dining area to enhance the overall experience for users.
