Craiova Ignites Holiday Spirit with Europe’s Largest Christmas Market
Craiova, a vibrant city in southwest Romania, has unveiled what is now being hailed as Europe’s largest Christmas market. Officially opened on November 14, 2023, the market spans approximately 280,000 square meters (over three million square feet) and transforms the city center into a dazzling winter wonderland. The festivities will continue until January 4, 2026, providing ample opportunity for visitors to experience this unique holiday celebration.
This Christmas market has garnered impressive accolades, including the title of “Most Beautiful Christmas Market in Europe,” awarded by a panel of travelers. It has outshone well-known markets in Germany and Austria, such as the famous markets in Munich and Vienna. Visitors to Craiova can enjoy a range of attractions, including the highest-flying Santa sleigh in Eastern Europe and a large panoramic wheel, alongside an ice rink for skating enthusiasts.
The market features traditional wooden chalets offering handmade gifts, festive decorations, and a variety of culinary delights. Attendees can indulge in mulled wine, hot chocolate, grilled sausages, and chimney cake, all while enjoying the enchanting atmosphere created by the market’s extensive light displays and themed areas. According to the travel specialists at Ski Vertigo, Craiova promises to be one of Europe’s most magical and affordable festive destinations.
For those considering a visit, return flights from London to Craiova International Airport (CRA) can be found starting at around £53 per person, according to an analysis by Skyscanner. Many fare options range between £50 and £70 when travelers are flexible with their dates. A representative from Ski Vertigo noted, “A quick check on Skyscanner shows return flights from London to Craiova can often be found in the budget range when you’re flexible on dates. For many people, getting to Europe’s biggest Christmas market can cost less than a night out back home.”
While the festive atmosphere promises excitement, visitors should prepare for the winter weather typical of this region of Romania. December temperatures can be quite cold, with nights often dipping below freezing. “It’s beautiful but brisk,” Ski Vertigo cautioned, advising travelers to dress warmly in thermal layers, winter coats, hats, scarves, gloves, and suitable footwear. This preparation allows guests to fully enjoy the market, whether skating on the ice rink or browsing the stalls without needing to retreat indoors frequently.
For those who feel they have experienced the more traditional German and Austrian Christmas markets, Craiova offers a larger, theatrical alternative that remains surprisingly budget-friendly. Just a short flight of approximately three hours and 20 minutes from the UK, this festive experience promises to enchant visitors with its unique charm and vibrant offerings.
