€500,000 Fund Secured to Complete Walkway in Donegal
Donegal County Council has received a significant boost with the allocation of €500,000 aimed at completing the walkway connecting Carrigart and Downings. This funding comes from the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS), which supports both the repair of existing recreational facilities and the development of new infrastructure.
The announcement was made by the Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary. Donegal’s Minister of State, Charlie McConalogue, expressed enthusiasm regarding the funding, stating, “This is excellent news for Carrigart and Downings, and will be a huge boost for the area, which is one of the busiest tourist spots in Donegal.”
Impact on Local Tourism and Infrastructure
The funding is part of a larger initiative, with Donegal benefiting from a total of 63 projects that will receive a share of an overall investment of €16.5 million. This particular walkway project aligns with the National Outdoor Recreation Strategy, titled ‘Embracing Ireland’s Outdoors’, which encourages the development of outdoor amenities to enhance tourism and local community engagement.
In addition to the current funding, the 2024/2025 programme has seen allocations surpassing €24.7 million, marking the largest approval under ORIS to date. McConalogue acknowledged the cooperation from Minister Calleary and his team, emphasizing the importance of the Carrigart-Downings walkway in promoting safety and accessibility for both residents and visitors.
“The stretch between Carrigart and Downings is always busy, and this will further enhance the region as a tourist destination, while also making the road much safer,” he added.
Encouraging Outdoor Engagement
The funding announcement serves as a reminder of the rich outdoor amenities available in Donegal. McConalogue encouraged local residents and tourists alike to explore the unique offerings of the county, highlighting the importance of outdoor activities for community well-being and tourism development.
As work on the walkway progresses, it is anticipated that the project will not only improve safety but also attract more visitors to enjoy the natural beauty of the area. The completion of this walkway is expected to enhance the overall experience for those exploring the picturesque coastal region of Donegal.
