Experts Warn ‘Little and Often’ Heating Costs More in Winter
As winter temperatures drop, households are re-evaluating their heating methods. Experts caution that the popular “little and often” heating approach may lead to higher energy costs. This method, which involves heating homes for short periods throughout the day, is often perceived as an efficient way to manage bills. However, research from the Energy Saving Trust indicates that it might be an expensive choice.
The study reveals that maintaining a constant temperature is generally more economical. In fact, households that heat their homes consistently rather than intermittently could save an average of £1,200 annually. The findings suggest that when homes are heated only sporadically, the energy demand increases significantly, leading to a rise in overall heating costs.
Many households find themselves enticed by the notion that turning the heating off during the day can save money. Nonetheless, the Energy Saving Trust emphasizes that this practice can backfire. Homes that are allowed to cool down too much require more energy to reach a comfortable temperature again, resulting in higher bills.
In light of these revelations, experts recommend that households consider setting their heating systems to a lower, consistent temperature throughout the day. This strategy not only ensures comfort but also optimizes energy use. For instance, setting the thermostat to around 18 degrees Celsius (64 degrees Fahrenheit) could strike a balance between comfort and cost efficiency.
The advice comes as many households in the UK prepare for the coldest months ahead. January 2024 is expected to see particularly frigid conditions, making efficient heating more crucial than ever. Homeowners are encouraged to assess their heating strategies and explore options that can provide better energy efficiency.
In addition to adjusting heating patterns, experts suggest that households conduct energy audits to identify areas where heat may be escaping. Simple measures such as sealing drafts, insulating pipes, and using thick curtains can significantly enhance a home’s energy efficiency.
As discussions about energy costs continue to dominate, understanding the most effective heating methods becomes increasingly important for households. While the “little and often” approach may seem appealing, the evidence suggests that consistency is key to managing winter heating bills. By adopting these expert recommendations, households may find a path toward greater energy savings in the chilly months ahead.
