A long-standing family-run business, Farm Gate, has officially closed its doors in Charleville, located near the Limerick-Cork border. The shop, a staple for fresh produce for over two decades, was owned by brothers Paddy and Gerard Mortell. The closure marks the end of an era for many local customers who frequented the store for quality meats and fresh vegetables.

As the Limerick Leader reported, the final day saw a steady stream of loyal customers approaching the shop, only to find it locked. Many were visibly upset, reading a hand-written sign announcing the closure while trying the door handle in hopes of finding it open. The emotional response from the community underscored the shop’s significance in their daily lives.

Farm Gate was renowned for its butcher counter, offering high-quality Irish meat, alongside fresh vegetables and a cold deli section. Over the years, the Mortell brothers not only sold products but also provided butchering services for local farmers and reared their own chickens and turkeys. This commitment to quality and service made Farm Gate a beloved fixture in Charleville.

Community Impact and Local Sentiments

Fianna Fáil Councillor Ian Doyle expressed his sorrow over the shop’s closure, highlighting its importance to the town’s identity. He remarked, “It was an iconic part of the town and is a real loss.” Local business owners are also feeling the impact. Anne-Marie Egan, who operates Horizon Designs just two doors down, noted that the closure will have a detrimental effect on neighboring businesses.

“We had loads of passing trade,” Egan stated. “Even today, there are no cars parked outside, because people were pulling in, they’d run in, get their groceries and then they’d see something in our window.” She lamented the loss of foot traffic, adding that the shop’s closure creates a noticeable void in the community.

Egan further emphasized the generous nature of the Mortell brothers, who supported numerous local events and clubs, reinforcing their role within the community. She acknowledged the challenges of high operating costs, particularly for a large premises like Farm Gate, which may have contributed to the decision to close.

The Mortell brothers took over Farm Gate more than twenty years ago from a previous owner from Ballyhea, creating a legacy that will be missed by many.

While the Limerick Leader reached out to the Mortell family for a comment, the emotional reactions from the community speak volumes about the impact of this family business on Charleville. As the town adjusts to this significant change, residents are left to reflect on the memories and relationships built over two decades at Farm Gate.
