Family Transforms Van Into Camper for Under €9,000 Ahead of Festival

A family from Ireland successfully transformed a used Volkswagen Transporter T5 into a camper van for under €9,000 in preparation for the Electric Picnic music festival. This renovation not only provided a practical solution for festival accommodation but also aimed to reduce waste associated with disposable camping gear.
After nearly two decades of uninspiring vacations, the family sought a fresh experience. They were motivated by a desire to break free from consumerism and reduce their environmental impact. Research indicated that approximately 17% of landfill waste from music festivals in the UK comes from abandoned tents, prompting them to look for alternatives.
The journey began when the family’s husband acquired an old van, affectionately named Jason. Initially in poor condition, the vehicle required extensive renovations, including engine repairs and part replacements. The family quickly realized that the costs associated with the renovation could escalate rapidly. For instance, sourcing a replacement right wheel arch involved shipping expenses that exceeded the part’s cost.
In June, as the boys began their summer holidays, the family engaged in the renovation process together. They faced challenges in sourcing parts due to a surge in camper van renovations across Ireland. A trip to Belfast was necessary to secure the last set of matching windows available on the island. They also discovered a kitchen manufacturer who provided a dual-purpose bed that met safety standards.
By July, the family navigated the bureaucratic process of converting their commercial vehicle into a camper. They needed to undergo assessments for both the CVRT (Commercial Vehicle Roadworthiness Test) and the SQI to ensure the conversion met legal requirements. After gathering all necessary documentation, they submitted their application, which was subject to a four-week wait for approval by the Revenue Commissioners.
August brought the first test drive, with a weekend trip to an ecocamping site in Co Clare. The family utilized an attached awning tent for additional sleeping space. During their stay, they enjoyed local attractions such as the Cliffs of Moher and engaged in family activities, like card games and exploring the area via public transport.
The total cost for this two-night family adventure, including camping fees, food, and fuel, was approximately €300. This figure paled in comparison to their previous vacation expenses, making the trip both economical and enjoyable.
Looking ahead, the family is excited to use their camper for future adventures, including a planned visit to Electric Picnic. They emphasize the importance of creating family memories while maintaining control over their experiences, particularly given the needs of their neurodiverse children.
The completion of this renovation not only fulfilled their immediate needs but also aligned with their values regarding sustainability and responsible consumption. With the camper now ready for travel, the family anticipates exploring new destinations, including the Isle of Man, Wales, and Scotland, all while minimizing their environmental footprint.
The detailed breakdown of renovation costs highlights the family’s commitment to budgeting. The total expenses included €800 for the van purchase, €3,100 for kitchen and bed installations, and various other costs totaling €8,983. This financial planning showcases their approach to creating a functional and enjoyable family vehicle without succumbing to consumer pressures.
