Galway DJ Calls for More Support for Nightclubs in Ireland
Galway-based DJ Coillí Collins, known by his stage name DJ Shampain, has emphasized the need for greater governmental support for nightclubs in Ireland. Speaking to The Journal ahead of his performance at the Airneánach festival on November 27, 2023, Collins expressed concerns about the sustainability of the nightlife sector in the wake of the pandemic.
Collins highlighted that while nightlife in Ireland is revitalizing in certain respects, nightclubs are not receiving adequate support compared to other sectors. He remarked, “I don’t think there is enough support there from the government.” He pointed out that following the success of the Give Us The Night campaign in 2019, which sought to address the challenges faced by the nightlife sector, the COVID-19 pandemic severely impacted the industry, leaving many clubs struggling without sufficient aid.
“During the pandemic, bars received substantial support, but there wasn’t as much for events held in clubs,” Collins noted. He elaborated on the issue, explaining that nightclubs do not generate revenue in the same way as other businesses, leading to their lower prioritization by government officials. “The current economic models don’t suit nightclubs,” he said, citing the government’s focus on revenue-generating sectors as a barrier to adequate support.
Collins also discussed the challenges faced by nightclubs located in city centers, where sound restrictions often hinder their operations. He referenced the long-standing struggles of Fuse in Brussels, one of Europe’s oldest clubs, which faced pressure from local authorities due to noise complaints. “It’s a story as old as time,” he remarked, suggesting that sometimes artists must create their own spaces within existing systems.
Despite these challenges, Collins acknowledged some positive developments in the industry. He praised Galway City Council’s new night-time economy advisor, Kate Howard, for her efforts in organizing the Airneánach festival. “People like Kate are doing a phenomenal job because they care about and are interested in the arts,” he said. Collins also expressed regret over the recent electoral defeat of Catherine Martin, the former Minister for Culture, who played a significant role in supporting artists through initiatives like the basic income scheme.
The appetite for alternative music events appears to be growing in Galway, according to Collins. He noted that venues like the Róisín Dubh now host regular techno nights, reflecting a shift in audience preferences. “When I started out at 18, there was not much choice for people in Galway,” he explained. Past clubs like Carbon and Karma primarily catered to those more interested in drinking than the music itself. “Today, people care more about who is playing and what gigs are happening.”
The inaugural Airneánach festival aims to celebrate Galway’s nightlife, history, and culture. Events will take place in Saint Nicholas’ Collegiate Church, the city’s oldest building, which has stood for over 700 years. Collins plans to debut a new experimental project called Cathedral at the festival, marking a departure from his usual DJ performances. “The energy I have in my sets as Shampain comes from experimental music,” he said, expressing excitement about exploring this new direction.
The festival will not only showcase music but also highlight Galway’s rich cultural heritage. Collins noted the historical significance of the venue, mentioning that figures like Cromwell and Christopher Columbus are said to have visited the church, which adds to the atmosphere of the event.
As the nightlife landscape continues to evolve, the call for enhanced support for nightclubs remains critical. The future of Ireland’s vibrant nightlife culture may depend on the recognition and prioritization of venues that contribute to its artistic and economic richness.
