Galway Festivals Secure €293,252 in Government Funding
Five local festivals in Galway have been awarded funding from a government scheme totaling €293,252. Announced by Minister Patrick O’Donovan, this initiative is part of the Small Scale Local Festivals and Summer Schools programme, which is set to unfold across Ireland in 2025. The funding aims to support projects that celebrate local music, arts, heritage, and sustainable living.
Funding Distribution and Festival Details
In Athenry, the Athenry Arts & Heritage Company received €5,000 for a festival designed to foster cultural activity. The event will provide a platform for diverse artistic expressions, including music, drama, and visual arts. By organizing participatory events, the festival seeks to engage the community and encourage arts practitioners to demonstrate creativity while connecting with a wide audience.
The Centre for Environmental Living also secured €5,000 for a festival that celebrates creativity, sustainability, and cultural heritage. This event will include hands-on workshops, storytelling, poetry, and performances while showcasing eco-friendly practices and traditional crafts. The festival aims to foster artistic expression while promoting sustainable living practices.
Another €5,000 grant was awarded to Comharchumann Shailearna Teoranta for a festival in the Connemara Gaeltacht. This celebration, titled “Féile lán-Ghaeilge drámaíochta, litríochta agus ceoil í Scoil Gheimhridh Joe Steve,” honors the work and life of Joe Steve Ó Neachtain, a prominent figure in the Irish cultural scene known for his contributions to drama, poetry, and community action.
Féile Cheoil Larry Reynolds received €5,000 for a four-day family-friendly festival that showcases the historic East Galway Style and the richness of Ireland’s cultural heritage. The festival will feature immersive workshops in traditional music, song, dance, and language, alongside music sessions, lectures, ceilís, CD launches, competitions, and concerts aimed at fostering cultural engagement and artistic expression.
Lastly, the Resurgam Choir CLG has been awarded €4,900 for a music festival in Galway City. Set to take place at St. Nicholas’ Collegiate Church, the festival aims to present a diverse array of concerts and immersive musical experiences. This event will involve local and international artists, aiming to reach a broad audience over three days in anticipation of the Galway Early Music Festival’s 30th anniversary next year.
Minister O’Donovan’s Remarks on Cultural Importance
Minister O’Donovan expressed the significance of culture and the arts, stating, “Culture and the arts bring so much richness to our lives. They connect us to one another, remind us of our shared stories and traditions, and celebrate the beauty of coming together as a community.” He emphasized that through the efforts of his department, the government is committed to supporting local festivals and summer schools across Ireland. These spaces allow individuals from diverse backgrounds to gather, share experiences, and forge lasting connections.
The Minister added, “From music and storytelling to costumes and folklore, these projects offer a colorful glimpse into our heritage and help shape Ireland’s cultural tourism in a truly meaningful way.” He acknowledged the dedication of everyone involved in these festivals, from organizers to volunteers and artists, highlighting their role in making these events possible. “I hope people across the country will take the time to enjoy the incredible array of programmes on offer this summer,” he concluded.
