Galway’s Mbryonics Creates 125 Jobs with New Facility Launch

A Galway-based space technology company, Mbryonics, has announced the creation of 125 new jobs over the next two years following the opening of its new manufacturing facility, Photon-1. This facility, located in Dangan, signifies a major shift for the company from research and development to large-scale production of photonic satellite optical communication networks.
Founded in 2014, Mbryonics currently employs about 100 individuals. The new roles will span production, engineering, sales, and marketing support, contributing significantly to the company’s mission of delivering the “internet in space.” This development also positions Ireland as a key player in the global space economy.
In addition to the new jobs, Mbryonics will expand its operations into Clare by leasing Block R in the Shannon Airport Business Park. This 40,000 square foot facility is recognized for its advanced manufacturing capabilities and will support the company’s growth plans. The expansion aims to meet the demands of significant programs such as the EU’s IRIS2 constellation, which focuses on secure satellite internet for government agencies, as well as other international customers.
Significant Milestones and Collaborations
The launch of the Photon-1 facility is rooted in over a decade of collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA) and Ireland’s ESA Delegation. This partnership has been crucial in developing advanced satellite optical communication technologies, culminating in the establishment of the first volume manufacturing facility of its kind in Galway.
The facility will initially produce Mbryonics’ flagship optical communications terminal product, StarCom, with an annual capacity of 500 units. A spokesperson from Mbryonics highlighted that this significant milestone underscores the company’s commitment to innovation and the advancement of space technology in Ireland.
Minister for Enterprise Peter Burke TD welcomed the announcement, calling the Photon-1 facility a “landmark” for Ireland’s space sector. He emphasized the importance of the partnership with ESA, stating, “This demonstrates how Ireland’s membership of ESA not only drives innovation but also creates high-value jobs, boosts exports, and positions our country at the forefront of the fast-growing global space economy.”
Future Prospects and Community Impact
John Mackey, CEO of Mbryonics, expressed pride in opening the new facility in Galway and anticipation for further expansion into Shannon. He stated, “As a Galwegian, it is especially meaningful to see our home city become a hub for cutting-edge space technology.” Mackey acknowledged the support from Minister Burke, Enterprise Ireland, and the Irish Delegation to ESA, crediting them with helping the company reach this pivotal moment.
He further mentioned that Photon-1 represents not only a commercial milestone but also a symbol of Ireland’s 50-year journey with ESA. The company is strategically positioned to provide the technologies and infrastructure necessary for the evolving space landscape. Looking ahead, Mbryonics has secured plans for a Photon-2 site in Shannon, with a projected capacity for over 5,000 units per year.
The Shannon Airport Group also expressed enthusiasm about the expansion, highlighting the new jobs as a testament to Mbryonics’ ambition. A representative stated, “Today’s announcement of 125 new jobs in Galway is a testament to Mbryonics’ commitment to driving innovation and economic growth across the West of Ireland.”
As Mbryonics embarks on this new chapter, the company’s growth not only promises to create jobs but also aims to enhance Ireland’s stature in the burgeoning global space economy, setting the stage for future advancements in satellite technology.
