Historic 1898 Christmas Card Discovered at Kilkenny’s Club House Hotel
A historic Christmas card dating back to 1898 has been discovered at the Club House Hotel in Kilkenny, Ireland. The card, which bears the inscription “with Kind Remembrances and Best Wishes for Christmas and New Year,” was commissioned by the establishment’s former proprietors, Mr. and Mrs. TF Murphy. This remarkable find adds to the hotel’s rich legacy, which has been rooted in hospitality since its origins as a lively inn and fox-hunting lodge in 1797.
The Club House Hotel, located on Patrick Street, has evolved significantly over the years. Initially, the property was a gathering place for the local gentry, with its annual lease once paid to the Duke of Ormond in the form of “two fat turkeys.” By 1813, following the opening of the new Cork Road, it became one of Ireland’s earliest recognized hotels, establishing a tradition of service that has lasted more than two centuries.
Celebrating Heritage with Georgian Traditions
This year, the Club House Hotel is embracing its heritage by celebrating the festive season with a programme inspired by Georgian customs. Owners Ian Brennan and Joanna Hannick are inviting guests, families, and groups to partake in a series of events throughout December, reflecting the conviviality of the era through decor, food, and entertainment.
“We feel a deep responsibility to preserve this building and the heritage it represents,” stated Ian Brennan. “This year, we undertook a significant restoration of the hotel with the support of the Heritage Council and specialist conservation architects. It was important to us that the work honored the original character of the house and the stories it holds.”
Brennan emphasized the importance of celebrating tradition, noting the opportunity to engage the local community and returning guests through festive activities. “A Georgian Christmas gives us the chance to celebrate tradition in a way that honors our heritage and offers something our local community and returning guests can enjoy together,” he added.
Festive Highlights and Community Engagement
The festive highlights at the Club House Hotel include Georgian Christmas Party Nights, private dining experiences, and seasonal table traditions. Families can look forward to long-table Sunday lunches, while private rooms are available for extended celebrations. The hotel aims to create a warm atmosphere reminiscent of its historical roots, allowing guests to celebrate together during this special time of year.
