Kilkenny’s Waterford Road Upgrade Set to Enhance Safety and Connectivity
Plans for the Waterford Road Pedestrian and Cyclist Improvement Scheme in Kilkenny City have progressed to the construction phase. This initiative is expected to significantly enhance road safety and improve connectivity for both pedestrians and cyclists. The local authority has confirmed that the project follows the completion of detailed design and planning, marking a pivotal step forward in the city’s broader Active Travel Programme.
The Waterford Road scheme is designed to be one of the main radial routes into Kilkenny’s city centre. It aims to deliver community benefits by creating safer crossings, dedicated cycle lanes, and school bus bays. These improvements are intended to facilitate a safer environment for children commuting to local schools, as well as reduce congestion around school entrances.
Cllr John Coonan, Mayor of Kilkenny, emphasized the importance of this project for local families. “This is a hugely important investment for the local residents and schools along the Waterford Road,” he stated. He further expressed optimism that the enhancements would give parents peace of mind, promote healthier travel options, and alleviate traffic congestion during school hours.
The feedback obtained from public consultations played a crucial role in shaping the design of the Waterford Road scheme. The proactive engagement with the community has ensured that the project aligns with local needs and best practices in road safety. Kevin Pettit, Project Manager from the Active Travel team at Kilkenny County Council, noted, “The Waterford Road scheme has been carefully designed to respond to community feedback and best practice in road safety.”
Phased Works to Enhance Infrastructure
The phased construction will focus on significantly improving walking and cycling infrastructure while integrating safe crossings and facilities for school transport. The attention now shifts to the Waterford Road project, following the successful completion of the Freshford Road and Granges Road corridor last year, which was prioritized as a key school route.
With the Waterford Road scheme, Kilkenny City aims to establish a connected network of safe and sustainable travel routes. The implementation of this project is a vital step towards fostering a more environmentally friendly transportation culture in the city. The local authority anticipates that these upgrades will not only enhance safety but also promote greater accessibility for all road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, and public transport passengers.
As construction gets underway, the city looks forward to the long-term benefits this project will bring to the community, paving the way for a safer and more connected Kilkenny City.
