Limerick Shop Celebrates 100 Years with Surprise Celebration

A hardware shop in Doon, Limerick, marked a significant milestone over the weekend, celebrating its centenary in business with a surprise event organized for owner Kevin McNamara. Family and friends gathered to commemorate the 100 years since the establishment of McNamara’s Hardware, which was initially opened by Kevin’s late father, Patrick McNamara, affectionately known as Paddy.
Originally named Macs, the store was founded in 1923, serving as a mill, fuel yard, and general store. While the mill and fuel yard have since closed, the shop continues to thrive and remains a beloved fixture in the community. The celebration showcased the enduring legacy of the McNamara family, reflecting the strong ties within the local area.
Kevin’s daughters, Lauren and Aisling McNamara, along with their mother, Bernie McNamara, orchestrated the surprise event. Numerous customers and family members, many of whom have a long-standing history with the shop, attended the gathering to express their support and celebrate the occasion. “It was a lovely afternoon,” said Lauren, highlighting the familial connections that have been fostered through the shop.
The event featured a special presentation, where Kevin was awarded a plaque to commemorate the significant milestone. Reflecting on her father’s reaction, Lauren noted, “Shock!” indicating the unexpected nature of the celebration and the heartfelt appreciation from the community.
The legacy of McNamara’s Hardware extends beyond just a business; it has been integral to the fabric of Doon for a century. The presence of the shop has not only provided essential services but has also created a gathering place for residents, fostering relationships and community spirit. As the shop embarks on its next century, it stands as a testament to the dedication and hard work of the McNamara family, ensuring it remains a cherished establishment in the heart of Limerick.
