New Owners to Preserve Legacy of Denny A’s Pub in Ballingarry

The iconic Denny A’s Pub in Ballingarry, Ireland, will continue to serve the community under new ownership, ensuring its long-standing legacy remains intact. Following the passing of its beloved owner, Denny Ahern, last year, the establishment has recently gone “sale agreed” and will maintain its identity as a pub.
Denny Ahern, affectionately known as Denny A, was a central figure in Ballingarry, having deep roots in the area. Born and raised in Ballinroe, he initially ran a dairy farm before venturing into the pub business. In 1985, Denny sold part of his farmland to purchase what was then known as The Idler in Knockane. He operated that bar until the mid-nineties, after which he returned to his hometown and acquired Dunworth’s Bar, renaming it Denny A’s.
Throughout his life, Denny A was a significant contributor to the local sports community. He served as chairman of the Granagh-Ballingarry GAA in 1998 and again in 2013, and held various committee positions over the years. He was a dedicated sponsor of the local GAA team for an impressive 26 years. Denny was also an integral part of the team that clinched the junior hurling championship in West Limerick in 1974, 1975, and 1976, and they secured the county title in 1976. In 1987, he was part of the squad that won the East Limerick junior A championship.
Denny A’s reputation extended beyond sports; he was known throughout the greater Granagh and Ballingarry areas as a warm and welcoming figure. He consistently greeted patrons with a smile and was known for his generosity. Many local players had the opportunity to serve behind the bar or assist as stewards during events, further strengthening the bond between the pub and the community.
Following Denny A’s passing, tributes poured in, highlighting his impact on the village. In an obituary published in the Limerick Leader in 2024, local resident John Lynch referred to him as “our own JP McManus,” underscoring the affection and respect Denny commanded within the community.
With the pub’s new ownership, residents can look forward to the continuation of a cherished local institution. The commitment to maintain Denny A’s as a pub ensures that the spirit of Denny Ahern will live on for many years to come, making it a focal point for gatherings and celebrations in Ballingarry.
