Planning Permission Granted for New CBS Kilkenny Facilities

Kilkenny County Council has approved planning permission for the construction of new facilities at CBS Kilkenny Secondary School. The project includes the development of an artificial grass playing surface, surrounded by fencing, floodlighting, and ball stop netting. Additionally, all necessary site development and ancillary works will be carried out at the school’s location on Dunningstown Road and Lousybush Lane.
Concerns regarding traffic have been raised by local representatives. Cllr David FitzGerald expressed his worry about potential frustration among residents due to increased traffic in the area, stating, “This could be as controversial a scheme we’ve seen in the city for some time.” His remarks highlight the community’s apprehension regarding the impact of the new facilities on local traffic patterns.
Infrastructure Improvements and Timeline
As part of the development, an approximate 1-kilometre link road will be constructed from Freshford Road to the new CBS school. This road will feature improvements, including a signalised junction at the link road crossing, which is expected to be completed before the start of the academic year in 2023.
In addition, Lousybush Lane will provide a pedestrianised access route for students, enhancing safety and accessibility. However, these pedestrian improvements will not be finalized in time for the beginning of the new academic year as they are still in the tendering stage.
The approval of these facilities is anticipated to significantly benefit the school community, offering enhanced recreational opportunities for students. As the project progresses, local authorities and residents will be closely monitoring its impact on the surrounding area, particularly in relation to traffic flow and accessibility.
