Save Hundreds on Energy Bills During Ireland’s Heatwave

As temperatures rise across Ireland, households are seeking effective strategies to manage energy bills while maintaining comfort. Energy experts from Energia have outlined five practical tips that can help residents save money during the ongoing heatwave.
Practical Tips for Energy Savings
According to Energia, homeowners do not need to rely on expensive cooling systems such as air conditioning to beat the heat. A spokesperson emphasized that simple changes can significantly reduce energy consumption and costs. “With above-average temperatures this summer, keeping your home cool does not have to mean relying on fans or putting up with stuffy rooms,” the spokesperson stated.
One of the most significant adjustments is to manage window usage effectively. Keeping windows closed during the hottest parts of the day and opening them at night can prevent warm outdoor air from entering when temperatures peak. The spokesperson cautioned that allowing hot air inside can create an uncomfortable environment. “Warm outdoor air combined with trapped indoor heat quickly turns your home into an oven,” they explained.
Another essential tip is to block direct sunlight. Closing curtains or blinds in rooms that receive sunlight can help maintain a cooler indoor temperature. The experts pointed out that direct sunlight can raise a room’s temperature by up to 7°C after just three to four hours. This greenhouse effect leads to increased reliance on cooling appliances, thereby inflating energy bills.
Reduce Heat from Appliances
Energia also advises against using heat-generating appliances during peak hours, specifically between 12:00 and 16:00. Instead of cooking with ovens or using tumble dryers, homeowners are encouraged to prepare cold meals or use microwaves, which emit less heat.
In addition, utilizing a power strip can facilitate the quick shutdown of multiple devices, preventing energy waste. Many electronics consume power even when not in use, creating unnecessary heat. “Each device gives off a small amount of heat, but when many are plugged in, it can make a room warmer, especially if the room is small and not well-ventilated,” the spokesperson noted.
Lastly, turning off lights in unoccupied rooms and replacing traditional bulbs with energy-efficient LED lights can also contribute to cooler living spaces. The experts reminded consumers that during long summer days, natural light often suffices, making it easy to forget about indoor lighting.
Energia offers a smart meter service that allows homeowners to monitor their energy usage closely, enabling them to identify sources of high consumption and manage their energy bills more effectively. By choosing plans that offer lower rates during off-peak hours, customers can further reduce costs, allowing them to charge devices during cheaper periods.
As the heatwave continues, implementing these straightforward strategies can help Irish households stay comfortable while keeping energy costs down.
