Thousands to Receive €462 Fuel Allowance Payment in Weeks

More than 400,000 households in Ireland will soon benefit from a significant increase in financial support with an extra €33 weekly payment or a one-time lump sum of €462. The Department of Social Protection has confirmed that the new Fuel Allowance payment will commence during the week beginning September 22, 2025.
This initiative aims to assist those on lower incomes during the winter months when energy expenses typically rise. The Fuel Allowance can be issued either weekly at a rate of €33 or as two payments of €462 for the season. The program generally runs from late September through April each year, providing crucial financial relief to eligible households.
To qualify for the Fuel Allowance, applicants must be over 66 years old, live alone, and meet a means test. Individuals under 66 must receive a qualifying social welfare payment, such as a pension. Additionally, those living with dependent children, a qualifying partner, or someone aged over 66 can also apply. For the first time, individuals receiving Carer’s Allowance can access the Fuel Allowance if they fulfill the necessary criteria.
Changes introduced with the 2025 Budget have expanded eligibility criteria, lowering the means test disregard to those aged 66 and over, compared to the previous threshold of over 70. However, new recipients will only receive a maximum of €462 for the current season as payments are not backdated.
To access the Fuel Allowance, applicants must meet three primary conditions: they must receive a qualifying payment (unless over 70), satisfy the means test, and live alone or with specific individuals. For those over 70, income limits are set at €512 per week for individuals or €1,024 for couples. Conversely, individuals under 70 must receive a qualifying payment to qualify for the allowance.
The process for applying is streamlined through the MyGovID platform, allowing individuals to submit their applications online. For those unable to apply digitally, paper application forms are available for both age groups. These can be downloaded from the gov.ie website, collected from local post offices, or requested via phone.
Support for filling out application forms is readily available at Intreo Centres, Social Welfare Branch Offices, or Citizens Information Centres. During the application process, individuals may need to provide details about their household, finances, and relationship status.
This year’s Fuel Allowance payment is poised to provide much-needed assistance to thousands of households across Ireland, ensuring that those in need can better manage their energy costs during the colder months.
